Competitive adsorption of furfural and phenolic compounds onto activated carbon in fixed bed column.

چکیده
For a multicomponent competitive adsorption of furfural and phenolic compounds, a mathematical model was builtto describe the mass transfer kinetics in a fixed bed column with activated carbon. The effects of competitive adsorption equilibrium constant, axial dispersion, external mass transfer, and intraparticle diffusion resistance on the breakthrough curve were studied for weakly adsorbed compound (furfural) and strongly adsorbed compounds (parachlorophenol and phenol). Experiments were carried out to remove the furfural and phenolic compound from aqueous solution. The equilibrium data and intraparticle diffusion coefficients obtained from separate experiments in a batch adsorber, by fitting the experimental data with theoretical model. The results show that the mathematical model includes external mass transfer and pore diffusion using nonlinear isotherms and provides a good description of the adsorption process for furfural and phenolic compounds in a fixed bed adsorber.

A new activated carbon was produced from pulp and paper mill sludge as a low cost precursor via chemical activation by zinc chloride. The activated carbon was successfully used for the adsorption of phenol and two of its derivatives, i.e. 2-chlorophenol and 4-nitrophenol from aqueous solutions. The characterization of the prepared activated carbon demonstrated high textural properties for the s...

The main objective of this research is stability determination of activated carbon adsorbent at fixed bed adsorption column for desulfurization of diesel fuel by mathematical modeling. This model is based on mass balances. Equations that are the outcome of mass balances are known as the second degree of partial differential equations, and they must be solved together simultaneously...

Application of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) in adsorption process has been studied for the advanced treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater. Because of entering poisonous compounds such as furfural, phenol and sulfides into the oily wastewater of Tehran refinery, biological aeration basins of wastewater treatment unit may not have the desired performance of COD reductio...
متن کاملComparison of Adsorption Properties of Activated Carbons with Different Crops Residues as Precursors for Gold Cyanide Recovery: An Iranian Gold Industry Guide
Adsorption of gold cyanide on three types of Activated Carbons (ACs) has been investigated in batch and column adsorption conditions. Applied ACs have been derived from different crops precursors i.e., coconut shell (CAC), peach stone (PAC), and walnut shell (WAC). As peach stone and walnut shells are abundant agricultural residues in Iran, the activated carbons produced from these precurso...
متن کاملFIXED-BED ADSORPTION OF CONGO RED ONTO TEA WASTE IN THE PRESENCE OF Fe2O3 NANOPARTICLES: AN EXPERIMENTAL AND MODELING STUDY
In this study, tea waste (TW) is employed for the removal of Congo red (CR) from aqueous solutions in a fixed-bed column at 30 °C. The breakthrough curves of the adsorption process of CR on TW at three different flow rates are determined. The results revealed that the breakthrough curves were dependent on flow rates in a manner in which a lower flow rate was in favor of the CR adsorption in the...
